Choosing A Hypnotherapist - The Top Nine Tips

By: Steve Harold

Once you have decided that hypnotherapy is the form of intervention that you would like to have to resolve your issue, then next step is to find a suitable hypnotherapist. These guidelines on how to find the right hypnotherapist for you will help your decision making.

1) Personal Recommendation
It at all possible try to obtain a recommendation from a friend or family member who has been treated by a particular hypnotherapist. Doing this means that you will feel more confident and probably more relaxed knowing that you know someone who has had hypnosis sessions with this hypnotherapist.

However, it may be the case that although a hypnotherapist has been recommended to you, that this hypnotherapist is not appropriate for you or your particular issue. For example the person making the recommendation may have seen this hypnotherapist for stopping smoking. Your issue may be something more personal like a relationship issue and this hypnotherapist may or may not offer sessions for this type of issue.

2) National Body of Hypnotherapists
If you are unable to obtain a personal recommendation, your next option is to seek out one or more of the national hypnotherapy associations. For a hypnotherapist to belong to any of these professional bodies, they would have needed to provide details of their training and their indemnity insurance as a minimum requirement for membership.

Also national bodies require hypnotherapists to adhere to strict codes of conduct and ethics.

You can find the national bodies by typing in any of the search engines “hypnotherapy association” and you will be presented with the details of the websites for these bodies.

3) Location
It is important that the hypnotherapist be in reasonable travelling distance of your home or work place. If it is too far to travel to, you mind find yourself making excuses about not keeping appointments.

4) Availability
Some hypnotherapists have limited times and days that they are available. Some operate during week days only whilst others may be able to offer you an appointment on a weekend.

Many hypnotherapists offer evening appointments for clients who are unable to make a daytime appointment.

5) Price
The cost of a hypnotherapy session is an important consideration for most people. Fees can vary quite substantially between therapists. Fee differences occur because of the location a hypnotherapist may operate from and also factors such as experience may be included as well as the hypnotherapist’s costs for providing a room for the hypnosis session.

6) Hypnotherapy Consultation
All though it is not always the case, many hypnotherapists will offer a free initial consultation.

The idea behind the free initial consultation is that it allows you to meet the hypnotherapist face-to-face and make a more informed decision as to whether you want to see them or not. It gives you a chance to provide more details about your issue and ask any questions you might have about the hypnotherapist and hypnotherapy.

This is usually provided without any obligation to proceed to having a hypnotherapy session and it is worthwhile making sure this is what the hypnotherapist is providing.

Some hypnotherapists will make a token charge for the initial consultation to cover their costs.

7) The Sex of the Hypnotherapist
Occasionally, the sex of your hypnotherapist may be important with regard to the issue or your comfortability in discussing personal details. Although most hypnotherapists are trained to treat many issues specific to a man or a woman.

8) Experience of Hypnotherapist with your issue
When choosing a hypnotherapist an important question to ask is how much if any experience the hypnotherapist has in resolving your issue. This can help your confidence in knowing you are seeing a hypnotherapists who understands and has dealt with the aspects of your issue before successfully

9) Rapport
One of the most important aspects of making a decision to see any hypnotherapist is how you feel about them once you have made contact. The contact may be by telephone or it may be at the consultation. The hypnotherapist should help you to feel comfortable and respected. All hypnotherapists are trained at how to build rapport with any client quickly.

However we are all different and sometimes some clients and hypnotherapists recognise that it would be best not to work together on the client’s issue. If this is true the hypnotherapist will normally suggest other hypnotherapists to contact.

So try to get a recommendation if it is at all possible. If you are unable to do this contact one of the national hypnotherapy associations and obtain a list of hypnotherapists who are based in your area. Use the other pointers to help your narrow down which hypnotherapists you want to treat your issue.

Deciding on having hypnotherapy to resolve your issue is the first step. A crucial second step is deciding which hypnotherapist to go to.
