<p class="articletext">A neighbor of mine was home after a massive heart attack, caused by a very large, evil blood clot. According to what she understood from her cardiologist, a very large part of her heart was irreversibly damaged, and her life was going to have a change for good. No more smoking. No more red meat and shellfish such as crab, lobster, prawns and oysters, because they contain too much bad cholesterol. All the things that she liked were taken away. But she did not really care; she was too busy smiling. </p>
<p>She was only 33 years old and admitted that things could have been worse. Recalling back on her lifestyle, the way she worked and the way she ate. What if this heart attack occurred when she was 40, 53 or even older? She could then less fit or obese because of more cigarettes smoked or more roast beef eaten, and she could have been dead. Although she felt tired, weak, and a bit dazed but she was fortunate to be alive.</p>
<p>She admitted that she had this strange feeling whenever she hears some people talking about how they want to quit smoking, or lose weight; she has the urge to lean forward and recommends that they should have a mild heart attack. â€œJust a teensy little one, you know, just to clear the systemâ€. Evangelism can be a wonderful thing, but it is positively frightening when it is that misplaced. Fortunately, nothing of this sort has ever happened.</p>
<p>She strongly believes that her heart attack was a warning, a severe, well deserved kick in the pants for being an irresponsible, nicotine-inhaling, grease-eating, beef-devouring, exercise-hating, computer-hugging loser. She very much treasures the second chance she had. She calls this her second life and she is going to live it well.</p>
<p>But she understands that her reincarnation is not going to be easy. She has to forget about what she used to do in the past: smoking a cigarette after a great deep-fried, soft-shell crab or other similar cholesterol-rich dinners followed by creamy desserts. But then, she figures that she had eaten some of the richest food in the world and she paid handsomely for it in the worst way possible. It is good that she can try a different lifestyle from now. Do not feel upset or miserable if you could eat wonderful things that she eat now, even with a diet as restricted as hers. <p>If you are taking more than 2 spoonfuls salt per day, it is time to cut it. Give up processed foods and switch over to fruits and vegetables. Limit the sweets. Have a regular schedule of exercises. Meditation, breathing exercises, cycling, jogging, brisk walking, all these count a lot in reducing your blood pressure.</p>
<p>Along with the changed habits, develop a habit of thinking positively. Your supreme will power can cure any type of blood pressure.</p>

<p>For many, this can seem like a daunting task. However, nutrition expert Lynn Laboranti, M.S., R.D., maintains that it&#8217;s never too late to strive for optimal heart health. She offers the following five-step approach to help get your ticker in tip-top shape:</p>
<p>Step 1: Move It and Lose It. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), losing as little as 10 pounds can drastically reduce the risk of a heart attack. Daily aerobic activity, such as walking or swimming, will increase your fitness and help keep your heart in shape. Remember that every bit helps.</p>
<p>Step 2: Expand Your Palette. Eat a rainbow of fresh foods to get a wide variety of nutrients. Heart-healthy foods like garlic, fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish with beneficial omega-3 fatty acids, a handful of walnuts and even an occasional glass of red wine can be beneficial when added to a well-balanced, low-fat/low-cholesterol diet.</p>
<p>Step 3: Strive for a Perfect 10. Statins, or cholesterol-lowering drugs, are used by approximately 20 million Americans. Health experts found that statins deplete the body&#8217;s stores of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), a vitaminlike substance found in every cell in the body and responsible for boosting energy and providing powerful anti-oxidant heart protection against free radicals. Laboranti suggests taking a maximum-strength supplement such as Nature Made CoQ10 400 mg for optimal heart health.</p>
<p>Step 4: Put It Out. Smoking is the single most preventable cause of death in the U.S. Cigarette smokers are twice as likely to die from coronary heart disease as nonsmokers, says the AHA. But a Surgeon General&#8217;s report found that after one year off cigarettes, the excess risk of heart disease caused by smoking is reduced by half. Set up a plan to help you quit successfully. </p>
<p>Step 5: Stress Less. Stress-related complaints make up nine out of 10 visits to primary care physicians, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Besides challenging the immune system and affecting mood, constant stress can also take a toll on heart health. Make note of your stress triggers and create a strategy for managing them. Try setting aside time for yourself every day.</p>
<p>Most importantly, consult a health care professional before starting any diet or exercise regimen.</p>

<p>Reduce the &#8220;bad&#8221; fat. Eating food high in saturated fat, trans fat or dietary cholesterol-the &#8220;bad&#8221; fats-raises your blood cholesterol level, which is a major risk factor for heart disease. Read the Nutrition Facts panel on packaged foods to find out how much &#8220;bad&#8221; fat is in the product.</p>
<p>Check for the &#8220;heart-check mark.&#8221; An easy way to find heart-healthy foods in your grocery store is to look for the American Heart Association&#8217;s red heart with a white check mark. This icon is on products certified to be low in saturated fat and cholesterol. Visit heartcheckmark.org to find a complete list of more than 800 heart-healthy foods. </p>
<p>Keep moving. Physical activity helps raise HDL (good) cholesterol. Plus, it&#8217;s beneficial for controlling weight and can also help control blood pressure. </p>
<p>Try to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity, such as brisk walking, on most or all days of the week. If you can&#8217;t devote a full half hour, try for three 10-minute intervals of activity. </p>
<p>Concerned about cholesterol? </p>
<p>&#8226; Get a cholesterol screening. You should have your cholesterol checked at least every five years starting at age 20. It should be checked more often if you have high cholesterol or are at higher risk. Follow your healthcare professional&#8217;s recommendations.</p>
<p>&#8226; Know your history. Although a healthy diet can help many people prevent or manage high cholesterol, heredity plays a role, too. Be sure to tell your doctor about your family history so he or she can assess your disease risk.</p>

<p class="articletext">There may be good news for stroke patients and their caregivers. A new device has been created that is said to offer those who have had a stroke new hope of regaining significant muscle movement, and with it, increased mobility and independence.</p>
<p>Stroke is the third-leading cause of death after heart attacks and cancer in the U.S., affecting some 700,000 Americans each year. Those fortunate enough to survive often face a number of challenges. While strokes cost the U.S. economy $56 billion a year, no price tag can accurately portray the psychological cost to the stroke patient-or to his or her loved ones and caregivers-when the patient is left wholly or partially paralyzed, and possibly also unable to communicate. </p>
<p>Until recently, the medical community believed it was not possible for the post-stroke brain to be, in essence, &#8220;rewired&#8221; to reconnect the immobile muscles. Physical therapists typically instructed patients who had lost control of their left hand to use their right, or vice versa, as a form of compensation. </p>
<p>Now, however, thanks to a new device called the NeuroMove, all that may be changing. The machine monitors a patient&#8217;s mental attempts to move his or her muscles. It uses electrodes, affixed to a problem area, to deliver safe electrical stimulation. At the same time, it monitors and analyzes neural activity, and distinguishes signals that indicate attempts by the brain to move the muscle. When a strong enough attempt is made, the device initiates muscle movement. Over time, the patient&#8217;s neural connections may be relearned and reestablished, and the affected muscles may once again be able to move on their own. </p>
<p>The device was created by a company called Zynex Medical that provides electrotherapy products and pain management systems for patients with functional disabilities.</p>
<p>In recent clinical trials, the NeuroMove helped 90 percent of the stroke patients regain significant muscle movement. It is FDA cleared for use with a doctor&#8217;s prescription. </p>
<p>Thomas Sandgaard, President and CEO of Zynex Medical, explains that the NeuroMove works by &#8220;stimulating and reactivating the muscles themselves, while reestablishing brain-muscle connections that can help restore the patient to a greater degree of voluntary movement.&#8221;</p>
