<p>Vitamins can help a student as they prepare to face the world and the many pressures it brings. The worst thing for a student to experience is a bad cold or a virus during finals. All the cold and flu medicine in the world will not cure in time for the finals, especially if it is only a couple is a wide variety of vitamins and antioxidants that can combat sickness and infection.</p>
<p>All students should be warned about taking good care of their bodies all year round. It is very annoying to hear someone coughing and sneezing uncontrollably, especially taking a test that can affect ones future. The following information is a listing of healthy vitamins.</p>
<p>A person who has a proper balanced diet and takes vitamins will be more alert and productive than someone who neglects taking care of their health. It is guaranteed that a person who is in school full-time and in the midst of a crash study course is more likely to either do poorly or mediocre on their exams. <p>Why we sleep at night is linked to pineal gland, a pea-sized gland located in the <br />
brain. It secretes a neurohormone melatonin. At day the pineal gland is inactive, <br />
but at night it secretes high levels of melatonin, which makes sleep all the more <br />
inviting to all of us.</p>
<p>Because of its involvement in the body&#8217;s circadian rhythm, consumers are driven to think of it as a sleep inducer, especially when attacked by insomnia or jet lag.</p>
<p>Just how effective it is in curing insomnia has been a subject of many scientific <br />
studies, and results so far are mixed. Some have shown positive findings, but most had significant limitations, like the duration of the studies or lack of female <br />
participants.</p>
<p>If you have insomnia, it is recommended to know its underlying cause. Modifications to present lifestyle and sleeping environment also help, as some factors when changed or eliminated have shown to bring improved quality of sleep to some people for a long time.</p>
<p>Another notion worth of attention here is the levels of melatonin in old people <br />
compared to those in younger people. Many elders have trouble falling asleep, and it is attributed to their declining melatonin levels. However, a recent study had cast doubt on the popular notion that melatonin levels actually go down as people age.</p>
<p>A team consisting of Dr. Charles Czeisler, M.D., Ph.D. and his colleagues at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women&#8217;s Hospital studied 34 healthy elders, male and female, free from sleep disorders and medications ranging from 65-81 years of age, by comparing their nighttime melatonin levels with those from 98 younger men aged 18-30.</p>
<p>By taking and analyzing their blood samples, they discovered that the melatonin <br />
levels of the older group had no significant difference from those belonging to the younger group. </p>
<p>&#8220;The idea that a pineal aging clock winds down as you get older is simply not true,&#8221; says Jamie Zeitzer, Ph.D. &#8220;Being older does not cause a person to have low melatonin levels. While we know that some older individuals have low melatonin levels, it isn&#8217;t because of their age per se.&#8221;</p>
<p>However, melatonin as a supplement seems promising in fighting jet lag and in <br />
promoting daytime sleepiness.</p>
<p>Dr. James K. Wyatt of Rush University Medical Center and his colleagues at Harvard Medical School assigned a group of people free from sleep disorders to be put on a 20-hour sleep-wake schedule, simulating a traveller crossing four time zones eastward every day. They were asked to take 0.3 or 5 mg of melatonin or a look-alike placebo pill 30 minutes before each scheduled sleep period, which lasted for 7 hours.</p>
<p>People who took melatonin had longer sleep time during the day when the body doesn&#8217;t normally produce it, compared to those who took placebo, the study found out. But when they were given melatonin at night when the body produces its own melatonin, no added benefits were discovered. </p>
<p>Also, melatonin as a supplement seems to lift winter depression by resetting the <br />
circadian rhythms in people affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). </p>
<p>The researchers assigned 68 SAD patients to take either low doses of melatonin or placebo in the morning or afternoon for one winter month. Then they analyzed their sleep activity, melatonin rhythms, and depression symptoms. The researchers had found out that melatonin had more antidepressant properties compared to placebo.</p>
<p>SAD happens when there is a delay in daily circadian rhythm due to the later winter dawn. </p>
<p>In addition to melatonin, getting enough morning sunlight works best to people with SAD.</p>

<p>Even worse, our entire body may start a decline that, over a period of years, may develop into a very serious disease such as, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, etc. </p>
<p>That there is a relationship between what we eat and specific disease was first noted by the Englishman William Fletcher in 1905 while researching the causes of the disease beriberi. He observed that the disease was prevented by eating unpolished rather than polished rice. He concluded that the husk of rice must have special nutrients, which we know today as vitamins.</p>
<p>Even before this discovery, fruits and vegetables were known to prevent and cure many diseases. Even though what we now know as &#8220;vitamins&#8221; were unknown, many of their benefits were well recognized.</p>
<p>Even today English sailors are known as &#8220;Limeys&#8221; because, when limes were added to their diets, they no longer suffered from scurvy.</p>
<p>While vitamins prevent and cure some specific diseases, they also are necessary for virtually every function within our bodies.</p>
<p>Because of heavy advertising, we associate Vitamin C with preventing/fighting colds. In truth, Vitamin C does not prevent or fight a cold. It bolsters and strengthens our immune system which attacks the cold germs. </p>
<p>Vitamin C performs many other important functions within the body. A major function is synthesis of hydroxyproline, an important component of collagen and, thereby, all connective tissues. </p>
<p>Vitamin C is essential for growth of cartilage, bone and teeth, and for wound healing. It contributes to the structure of bones, muscles, and blood vessels.</p>
<p>Vitamin C helps support the immune system, aids amino acid metabolism and iron absorption.</p>
<p>Another vitamin - B6 - does not have a reputation as grand as Vitamin C yet it is as essential to good health. Vitamin B6 cannot claim dramatic and immediate &#8220;cures&#8221; for diseases like scurvy, beriberi, or colds like other vitamins, but it is known as the master vitamin in processing amino acids.</p>
<p>It is estimated that 50% of Americans are deficient in Vitamin B6.</p>
<p>The same is true for virtually every vitamin. Without a proper supply of vitamins, the body develops disease.</p>
<p>Some diseases, such as beriberi and scurvy, show up quickly and dramatically.</p>
<p>Other diseases, such as heart disease and cancer, take years to develop. They go undetected for many years until it may be too late.</p>
<p>Because the body is a &#8220;closed system&#8221;, vitamins, like every other nutrient, must come from the food we consume. The principal sources of vitamins are the fruits and vegetables we consume.</p>
<p>In 1936 the US Government released a report that clearly and emphatically stated that the soils used to grow our food products are so depleted of minerals that: &#8220;We know that vitamins are complex chemical substances which are indispensable to nutrition, and that each of them is of importance for normal function of some special structure in the body. Disorder and disease result from any vitamin deficiency. It is not commonly realized, however, that vitamins control the body&#8217;s appropriation of minerals, and in the absence of minerals they have no function to perform. Lacking vitamins, the system can make some use of minerals, but lacking minerals, vitamins are useless.&#8221;</p>
<p>Things have not improved in 70 years. In fact, they have gotten much worse. </p>
<p>An entire industry has come into existence because of this fact. Vitamins are consumed by 43% of Americans, yet we continue to suffer and die from preventable diseases that were unknown 50 years ago.</p>
<p>Research scientists have long recommended that nutritional supplements are absolutely essential to our health and wellbeing. This is especially true when we consider our long term health.</p>
