Well, you&#8217;re noticing symptoms of menopause. As a result your mid-section is expanding, and stubbornly refusing to respond to your efforts to shed its spare tire.</p>
<p>Your added weight is a perfectly normal symptom of menopause and you need not be concerned &#8216; that is, as long as you&#8217;re willing to take the necessary steps to drop the extra fat surrounding your waistline. You see if you keep the weight on and let it continue to accumulate, you&#8217;ll put yourself at risk of developing heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and many other chronic illnesses associated with obesity.</p>
<p>So, what&#8217;s the solution? Believe it or not, it&#8217;s actually just common sense and really very simple. You can eliminate menopausal weight gain, as well as other symptoms associated with menopause by eating healthy, controlling your caloric consumption and consuming the proper nutrients.</p>
<p>As your estrogen level declines, your body will naturally look for other places from where to get needed estrogen. Since your fat cells are capable of producing estrogen, your body works harder to convert your consumed calories into fat. Some foods are metabolized too quickly, thus causing unhealthy spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels, which results in additional fat accumulation. Because of this, you&#8217;ll want to avoid these foods, which include white rice, potatoes and white bread. Instead, add wholegrain bread, oats, rye and wheat germ to your diet.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll also want to eliminate fried foods; instead bake or broil when you cook. Baked and broiled foods aren&#8217;t just healthier, but they can actually be more appealing to the taste buds. When cooking with oils, avoid using processed cooking oils. Alternatively, use unprocessed oils, such as extra virgin olive oil, canola, wheat germ and flaxseed oil.</p>
<p>When you feel like having a snack, reach for nuts, seeds (pumpkin and sunflower), dried fruits and fresh fruit. Try to stick with melons, bananas, oranges and lemons, as these fruits are high in potassium, which is an excellent source to help balance sodium and water retention. You&#8217;ll also want to increase your daily intake of vegetables, including salad (preferably made with romaine or bib lettuce, which contain more nutritional value than does iceberg lettuce), yam and dark leafy vegetables, such as spinach, broccoli and cabbage. Peppers and tomatoes aren&#8217;t just beneficial to your health and diet, but they&#8217;re quite tasty and can add a lot to your recipes.</p>
<p>Soy foods are fast becoming a popular choice to reduce symptoms of menopause. Soy foods include soybeans, calcium-fortified soy milk, soy yogurt, tofu and others. I&#8217;ll admit that I haven&#8217;t yet indulged in soy-fortified foods, but it&#8217;s said that the benefits of their consumption are quite significant.</p>
<p>I highly recommend that you drink more mineral and bottled water, and reduce your intake of caffeine and alcohol. This will significantly reduce the incidence of hot flashes.</p>
<p>Of course, you&#8217;ll be tempted to stray from healthy eating once in awhile, which is okay &#8216; as long as you make it an occasional treat and not a regular practice. If you stick to the guidelines I mentioned, you will notice a reduction in many menopause symptoms, such as hot flashes, bloating, water retention, fatigue and mood swings.</p>
<p>Obviously, by consuming foods low in calories and fat you&#8217;ll also notice that you&#8217;re better able to control the weight gain associated with menopause. By adding a regular exercise program to your lifestyle, not only will you control your weight, but you&#8217;ll lose a significant amount of weight, as well. Fortunately, the foods that I&#8217;ve outlined will no doubt give you the energy needed to actively exercise each day. If you include weight training you&#8217;ll build muscle, become lean and toned (for real &#8216; even at our age!) and reduce the risk of osteoporosis.</p>
<p>When we were young girls we didn&#8217;t aspire to experience menopause. As a matter of fact, I can say with confidence that not one ten-year-old girl has ever muttered the words â€œWhen I grow up I want to be menopausal.â€ The fact is, if we&#8217;re lucky enough to experience life, menopause is just a natural part of being a woman. It&#8217;s not the end, but rather a very beautiful beginning of self confidence, maturity, beauty and an active lifestyle &#8216; that is, if you choose to make it so.</p>

<p>I. Statistics</p>
<p>Smoking is a major public health concern among women in the United States. From 1997 to 2001, it resulted to an estimated annual average of 178,000 deaths among US women. </p>
<p>Since 1980, nearly 3 million women died prematurely due to smoking-related health problems. Lung cancer is now the number one cause of death, even surpassing breast cancer. It is predicted that lung cancer will kill nearly 68,000 women this year, much higher than breast cancer (41,000).</p>
<p>Women account for 39% of all smoking-related deaths each year, a figure that has more than doubled since 1965.</p>
<p>Among ethnical races in the US, smoking is most prevalent in American-Indian women (28.5%), followed by non-Hispanic whites (20.4%), and non-Hispanic blacks (17.2%). It has the lowest prevalence rate in Asians (4.8%) and Hispanics (10.9%).</p>
<p>When it comes to educational achievements, it has the highest prevalence rate among women who had a GED diploma (39.6%), followed by women who have 9 to 11 years of education (34%), and lowest among women with 16 years of education (11.2%). </p>
<p>II. Factors That Drive Women To Smoke</p>
<p>The tobacco industry has creatively marketed cigarette brands to women, thanks to clever marketing strategies.Ads featuring beautiful women with cigarettes imply independence, glamour, and social desirability, driving women to think that it will greatly enhance their lifestyle.</p>

<p>Smoking damages the skin. It&#8217;s because it narrows the blood vessels in the outermost layers of your skin, reducing the supply of oxygen. It also damages collagen and elastin, two fibers that give your skin elasticity. </p>
<p>Female smokers greatly increase their risk of developing hip fracture, ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm, ischemic stroke and subarachnoid hemorrhage. However, women who abstain from the habit reduce their risk of developing stroke. After5-15 <br />
years of abstinence, their risk is almost the same as those of non-smokers.</p>
<p>Female non smokers are likely to suffer from the dangers of tobacco use as well, due to their exposure to secondhand smoke. </p>
<p>Women are likely to die from lung cancer due to passive smoking. Approximately 3,000 of them die annually from lung cancer, while 35,000 of them die due to cardiovascular disease. </p>
<p>Children exposed to secondhand smoke have 50% greater chances of developing lung cancer later in life, compared to those who were not. This is according to a study published in the British Medical Journal. A team of researchers led by Professor Paolo Viners of Imperial College of London tracked more than 123,000 non-smokers but were exposed to secondhand smoke as children and compared their health status to those who had not been exposed to passive smoking. They found out that 97% of passive smoking youngsters suffered from lung cancer, 20 others had upper respiratory cancers and 14 of them died from COPD, also caused by smoking.</p>
<p>IV. How Women Can Quit Smoking</p>
<p>But there is hope to women who want to quit. Quitting at any age is beneficial. Women who abstain from smoking reduce their risk of heart disease, regardless of age. This will be reduced within 1 to 2 years of quitting. They also decrease their risk of dying prematurely.</p>
<p>1. Get as many support as possible. Be part of social network groups of smokers who want to quit, and interact with former smokers and ask for advice. </p>
<p>2. Do other things that will divert your attention from smoking. When bored, you&#8217;ll likely get a pack of cigarettes. In this case, enjoy another hobby.</p>
<p>3. Quit slowly. Reduce the number of sticks you smoke each day. Completely withdrawing will make you look for a whole pack and destroy your plans.</p>
<p>Tobacco use is not good to everyone. Much studies have been done in the past. But the question is, are you ready to quit?</p>

<p class="articletext">If one were living in any of the colder regions of the world, the tell tale signs of having enjoyed a good vacation would be to wear a tan, acquired from hours of lazing in the sun, on some beach. Better still, is the idea of wearing a tan regularly by resorting to tanning under a tanning bed, under artificial conditions. While the latter form of tanning may look very authentic and satisfactory, it is a process of tanning that is fraught with the risk of cancer.</p>
<p>Thus, the debate on tanning and the risks of cancer has been raging as a debatable issue with strong contenders on both sides. Several studies have shown that tanning under a tanning bed can increase the risk of getting cancer. On the other hand studies have shown that tanning has helped reduce the risks of cancer by its controlled system that reduces the risk of sunburn.</p>
<p>The UV rays that tanning under lights creates stimulates the skin cells. The activated and stimulated skin cells produce more melanin, which is the pigment that gives skin its natural color. Thus a tanning bed activates this principle under controlled conditions and the fashion industry has promoted this method, making it highly popular among Scandinavian women. That is why the effects of tanning and the risk of cancer have been extensively carried out among this category of women. The results have shown that among the women who regularly resorted to tanning, the risk of developing cancer had increased to 55%. In the same way a similar study carried out at Dartmouth concluded that the regular user of the tanning method was two and half times more likely to develop cancer.</p>
<p>The above studies as well as findings from independent sources had led the American Medical Association (AMA) to adopt a resolution calling for a total ban on tanning under light, so as to prevent the incidence of cancer from this source. But the US Federal Trade Commission (USFTC) was no twilling to go with them on this resolution and declined to institute such a ban. The contention of the USFTC&#8221;was that the use and sale of tanning equipment for cosmetic purposes could be permitted as it had certain healthy benefits accruing from its use.</p>
<p>Supporting the argument put forth by the Federal Trade Commission lobby another organization, namely the Tanning Trends, contended that tanning on a tanning bed actually reduced the risk f developing skin cancer. Their argument was based on the fact that as the conditions of tanning were being done in a controlled environment the tanning process was completely regulated and there was no risk of getting sunburn in the process. In a natural condition, as on a beach the holiday maker for instance, had no control over the tanning process and if the sun was hot then there were chances of getting too much sunburn, in the bargain. Such exposure to sunburn ran the risk of getting cancer even more. Thus by getting a tanning done on a tanning bed, the cancer could actually be prevented altogether.</p>

Start with a cup of regular sugar, a quarter cup of honey, and juice from half of a lemon. Microwave this mixture for two to three minutes or until it starts to bubble. It should have a smooth consistency at this point. Leave the bowl to cool for about five minutes.</p>
<p>Now that the sugar solution has cooled you need to get a wooden stick similar to a tongue depressor for applying it, while still in the kitchen grab some corn starch. You will also need multiple strips of non colored cloth, cutting up an old white T-shirt works well.</p>
<p>Sugaring works like waxing and the sugar and honey solution will stick to the hairs to assist you in pulling the hairs out by the roots, so unfortunately, like waxing, it will hurt.</p>
<p>Clean and dry beforehand the area you plan on sugaring. Be careful that this area is free from residue of soaps or lotions. It is said that sugaring will work the best on the upper lip hair line and the bikini area. This process is messy so it is best to do this in the bathroom or somewhere you can be sure clean up is as easy as possible.</p>
<p>Start by spreading some cornstarch on the area to be treated. Please note that whatever area you decide to treat the effects will last from two to six weeks with fine hair growth beginning to show about two weeks after the application. The more noticeable hair growths will show about four weeks after application.</p>
<p>After you have prepped the area with the cornstarch use the wooden stick or some similar applicator to apply a thin layer of the sugar mixture. Next, place a strip of cotton cloth over this. Use your hand to apply moderate pressure to this cloth rubbing it in the opposite direction of your hair growth. Take the end of the cloth strip and swiftly snatch it off in the opposite direction from that which your hair grows in. Use warm water on the treated skin to take off any of the sticky sugar mixture which may remain. If you desire, you can put an unscented lotion on the skin now.</p>
